Today we're celebrating UN Day•
Posted on October 24 2020
This year’s UN Day marks the 75th anniversary of The United Nations and its founding Charter. We celebrate this anniversary in a time of great uncertainty, while facing a global pandemic that has caused not only a global health crisis, but also severe social, environmental and economic impact. Although, it is an important time to be aware of the possibilities for positive change. Moreover, it is even more urgent for companies to come together and work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Swedish Stockings has always had the mission to change and influence the entire hosiery industry. By reason of this, we are proud to be doing our part to contribute to the SDGs. The specific goals that Swedish Stockings has a natural contribution to and has chosen to work closer with are the following:
Goal 5 – Gender Equality
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
This is a new goal that we have chosen to contribute more specifically to. In 2019 and 2020 we have collaborated with The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation, that is working to prevent gender-based violence and promotes women’s equal rights. Swedish Stockings has initiated a long-term collaboration with the foundation, and has so far contributed both through donations and by educating our following on social media about domestic violence and how to help manage and prevent it.
Goals 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Swedish Stockings contribute to improve water quality, wastewater treatment, safe reuse, increase water-use efficiency, ensure freshwater supplies, implement integrated water resources management, and to protect and restore water-related ecosystems. Our dyehouse re-uses 50% of their water and purifies the rest before releasing it back into the surrounding environment. Furthermore, all of our suppliers have an integrated wastewater management system. Also, we have carried out specific activities to contribute. During the past year we have participated in helping clean up our local waters in the Swedish archipelago on the East Coast and in Stockholm.
Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
Did you know our products are emission-less? That’s because our production and dyeing facilities run entirely on renewable energy! In this goal we specifically contribute to target 7.2, to increase the global percentage of renewable energy.
Goal 10 – Reduced Inequalities
Reduce inequality within and among countries.
We are proud to work with suppliers that are involved with both local charities in their country, and organisations such as Doctors Without Borders. We also require that our suppliers have policies regarding wage and social protection to reduce inequalities.
Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
We believe everyone should consume and produce sustainably. We are proud to have produced the first ever tights made from 100% recycled materials in our first Innovations project. For our second Innovations launch we made tights from recycled PET bottles. To close the loop of tights production, we accept old tights of any brand in our Recycling Program and turn them into tables sold on our website which was our third innovation. For us it is also important to inform our customers how to take care of their tights to extend the life cycle of the product. Even though we produce our tights as durable as possible, it is a delicate product that needs special care. Our suppliers are zero waste or dispose of their waste in proper ways. All of our suppliers have certificates of various sorts, a few of the most important ones being OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and SteP, Reach, Global Recycled Standard, The Organic Content Standard, GOTS and BSCI.
In this way, we increase the efficiency use of natural resources, provide responsible management of chemicals and waste, reduce waste through recycling and reusing, and encourage to sustainable practices.
Goal 13 – Climate Action
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
We want to act now and spread awareness of the impacts of hosiery production and consumption through campaigns, participating in seminars, expert panels and reaching out through social media. This summer we had a Cross Industry Talk to raise awareness together with other sustainable businesses, available on our IGTV, and our goal is to have more of them in the future. Furthermore, we have worked with DHL Go Green to offset our emissions from shipping. In 2019 we offset 12,580.26 kg CO2, which has been increased with 473% so far in 2020. In 2020, we have offset 72 040,8 kg CO2 so far. This equals approximately 13 flights around the world.
Goal 14 – Life Below Water
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
We believe we need to help our oceans whatever way we can. We do not produce from virgin materials since there are abundant resources to recycle all around us, especially in our oceans. Our Elin Tights are made from Econyl yarn, made from ghost nets lost at sea. By making Elin we contribute to making ocean waste into something new, at the same time as the ocean gets cleaner. By lowering our carbon footprint, we reduce ocean acidification. We protect ecosystems both by offering GuppyFriend washing bags that prevent micro plastics from harming ocean creatures, and by reducing water pollution since our suppliers purify the water that is being used in production.
There is always room for improvement, and Swedish Stockings is aware of that. Therefore we will continue to work hard on contributing even more to the goals by different targets. It is important that we all work together to be able to reach the SDG:s.
