Every other minute a woman dies from preventable causes related to childbirth and pregnancy, that means 840 women per day and 300’000 women per year. The vast majority of these deaths occur in low-resource settings, and most could have been prevented. To Swedish Stockings, being a brand started by women, run by a majority of women, most of us mothers – this is a heartfelt matter.
This Sunday, May 30th, marks Mother’s Day here in Sweden. To celebrate worldwide motherhood, we will donate 20% of our online sales to the amazing Läkarmissionen, contributing to more women being able to give birth in a clean hospital bed, supervised by a doctor. We asked their General Secretary Josephine Sundqvist to tell us more about their work.
Läkarmissionen work in fragile and conflict states, and one of their most prioritized countries is Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Josephine herself grew up. In countries like DR Congo they support childbirth, more specifically they have supported the building of a hospital, named Panzi hospital. When Josephine tells us how they work she states:
“We support women, not only during childbirth, but throughout their pregnancies, and throughout their life circle to bring maternal holistic sustainable health.”
Their work is centered around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. Their view on the goal is holistic, and they also include planetary health. They mean that we need a healthy planet in order to have healthy women. To complete their mission of a world free from maternal deaths they also need to support midwives and medical experts, strengthen health systems and raise the voices of women.
“Together with us, you can be part of our vision to eradicate maternal death and to make sure that every other minute a woman does not die from childbirth.”
Let's give more women a chance to celebrate motherhood!
