It's time to focus on the ocean

Swedish Stockings mission is to drive and implement sustainable production in the fashion industry. Our overall environmental focus year 2022 will be the ocean and we are partnering with The Perfect World Foundation in order to contribute to their very important work of restoring our oceans – clearing them from plastic debris and ghost nets, which are the greatest contributors to microplastics in our oceans.

The Perfect World Foundation is a non-profit organisation working with wildlife and nature in crisis. Scientists estimate that their is more than 150 million tonnes of plastic waste in our oceans and each year that number increases with 5-13 million tonnes. It’s estimated that in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean, if we don’t do anything about this problem.

The Perfect World Foundation run two important campaigns – The Blue Bucket, and Ghost Net Zero, which focuses on how we can all help to save the oceans. Read more, and contribute here.

What is microplastics?

Plastic does not biodegrade, but breaks down into ever smaller pieces, resulting in so called microplastics – pieces smaller than 5mm in dimension. Marine microplastics will affect many aspects of the marine fish and marine food chain, the microplastics have a toxic effect on fish and other aquatic life. At the moment, there is is 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our oceans. Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic makes their way into our oceans, and most of it comes from us humans.

What can I do on an individual level?

As a consumer you have great power to influence, not only yourself but people around you, to make better, sustainable choices. The below tips might seem trivial, but if we all follow them, we can make a difference.

  1. Consume smarter. Ask yourself Do I really need to buy this?
  2. Buy reusable water bottles, lunch boxes and shopping bags which you can use over and over.
  3. Air your clothes rather than washing them. Whenever possible.
  4. Recycle your plastics!

Can a pair of tights help to save the ocean?

In February 2022 we launched Nemo Tights, with the purpose of shining a light on the importance of protecting our oceans from overfishing, waste pollution and environmental toxins. A creative collaboration with well esteemed Swedish fashion illustrator Cecilia Carlstedt, read more here.
